My Journey Into Mobile Learning
Yes, I know we all hear and learn things while driving in the car or walking on the road with your family and friends, but what I'm talking about is the provision of education and teaching with the help of mobile phones, Pocket PCs and other portable devices.
In Australia there are 19.7million mobile phones – not bad for a country of 21 million people. Ialways ask how many babies are holders of mobile phones …
Round for the first couple of years I was interested and the technology itself distracted and what she could do. I'd buy a great time to all sorts of bits of equipment that are offered various types of communication and mobility. What I learned was that this technology is developing rapidly, and you can safely assume that the new technology is out of date within 90 days!
I introduced the range ofTechnology to many conferences and has been known as the one who always show the latest "toys" too.
While this was fun and I now have a great knowledge of mobile devices, it didn''t actually give me a lot of progress in relation to the development of mechanisms which may in which teachers and students use them to combine effectively with each other.
Text messaging was clear what we saw, but it has limited value, and the interesting, we found that, while it was OKfor a student, a teacher to the text at any time that is suitable for that same student was very upset when the teacher opened a message at a time that the students felt was not appropriate!
Working with the media team, I was able to develop some interesting games as learning activities that were specially designed for Pocket PCs. You can have a look at the early learning games on my site on http://www.caryloliver.com to give you an idea of the kind of thing that we have developed.
The determinationSide was that if a teacher wanted an educational game, it was a fairly cumbersome procedure of informing the guys developing, testing and correction, etc. .. systems and finally into one platform so that students can access it. In contrast to a choice between Apple computers and PCs when it comes to mobile devices, there are hundreds of platforms.
I needed a very simple way for teachers taking their first steps in preparation for its friendly material into a digitalFormat …..
To make a long story short, I finally raised about Digital Story Telling! This was the breakthrough I was looking for and I've hardly stopped breathing is.
Digital Storytelling is a means to a series of photos by linking several movements and transitions, such that the inclusion of a commentary in your own voice and end with a fantastic short film! I'm using free software from Microsoft, so there is no costly investment in a very short timeYou may stutter from the fury!
The program itself (Photo Story 3) will take you through a step by step process to import the pictures you want, add effects, transitions and motion, and note what you would like to say to each image. Then fold all together into a seamless movie. Then I transfer the finished movie on Movie Maker (also free) and add great looking titles, music and other effects to make it really professional.
Once completed, I can save these movies in a wholeDisplay range of sizes, so they are able, on mobile phones to large TV screen.
I labeled it as a digi-Learning, First Steps teacher sitting next to me and tell their stories. One teacher talked about the devastation and the silence as she showed us pictures of the last bush fire area, another teacher photographed a whole bunch of hazards at a construction site and discussed them. We have some very interesting stories about growing up and roasting of coffee andmore. And so began the ideas flowing ….
The next step was natural that the students wanted their work to tell history in digital format and provide the teachers thought of course, that would be great: read 100 poorly written papers or watch 100 films produced excited? child's play!
I always found myself spending more time teaching people how to make their digital stories and how the manner in which they used the software to maximize.
And thisFinally, it is what me to the point of manufacture of my digital storytelling Starter Kit, as more and more people asked me to help them. I have a sample story about my dog, I have a tutorial in digital form and history, I also tutorial in written form. In addition, I also created a weekly email tips that some of the questions I most frequently asked questions and the little things that make a big difference, to the finished product reflects.
My greatest enthusiasmall this was before, when I receive a conference, a film about a project I had done solved with a group of students. One of the students had done their entire application in digital format and history, after the presentation, a man came up to me and asked if he could have a copy of the film. It turned out he was the uncle of these students and he wanted to show the family what the students had done – how many family members would bother to read one piece of written work?
I thinkYou can say that I get pretty excited about this and I just hope that I have a few more people because it is digital storytelling really so much fun and so easy to infect. Has anyone tried and you would like?
